Glowing edges out Dandy`s duo

Glowing put herself in line for a tilt at the Vodafone Stewards` Cup at Goodwood next month when winning over the course today.

James Fanshawe`s mare was delivered with a finely-timed challenge by former champion Michael Roberts to lift the Vodafone Stewards` Cup Trial and make amends for her narrow defeat in the race 12 months earlier.

Roberts waited until entering the final furlong to pounce and Glowing grabbed Flak Jacket in the last strides to score by a head, with the favourite Zuhair - like the runner-up, trained by Dandy Nicholls - finishing strongly against the stands` rails the same distance away in third.

'I was told that whatever I did I wasn`t to hit the front too soon because she will pull up,' said Roberts.

'I believe some people thought she never won. I thought I won a head. And I did.'

Glowing was bred by Peter Hopper, who heads the partnership, Peter`s Friends, which race the six-year-old.

Hopper said: 'Michael had never saton her before but he was quite confident. She was only just beaten by Blue Mountain in this race last year and she`s done us proud. Now we can let her have a go at the Stewards` Cup and the Ayr Gold Cup.'

Dane O`Neill and David Elsworth teamed up to secure a 25-1 double with Salty Jack and Indian Creek.

Salty Jack, who joined Elsworth this year on the retirement of Vic Soane, needs to be played later than the epilogue and O`Neill carried out the task to perfection in the Mail On Sunday Mile Handicap.

The rider angled for a run entering the final furlong and still had five horses ahead of him 100 yards out, but Salty Jack`s change of pace saw him score by two heads from Dakota Sioux and Mytton`s Again.

Elsworth stayed at his Whitsbury yard, leaving his friend, Tony Hunt to oversee operations.

Hunt enthused: 'Dane`s done a super job. With this horse you can`t get there too early and he`s done it perfectly. He`s got a terrific turn of speed and that`s how he`s got to be ridden.'

O`Neill came from last to first with Indian Creek to romp away with the Adenstar Rated Stakes, scoring by six lengths from the favourite, Wood Dalling.

Late Night Out sealed a fine weekend for his trainer William Jarvis when landing the Listed Royal Navy `On The House` Stakes under Michael Tebbutt, catching Proceed With Care and Cauvery close home to win by one and a quarter lengths and half a length.

Jarvis had enjoyed a double on Saturday with Entail at Newmarket and Guaranda at Chester and he said: 'The horses are in good form and these winners are much needed. We`ve got a good team of staff and it`s nice to have a weekend like this when all their hard work is justified.'

Late Night Out was gaining his seventh success and Jarvis added: 'He`s a pleasure to train. He`s tough and he`s good too. He`s now won four Listed races and he`s been second in two Group Threes. He won the City Of York at the Ebor meeting last year and he could go for that again and I might have a look at a race abroad for him.'

Amateurs Tom Scudamore and Alyson Deniel failed to make their frame when representing Britain in the Fegentri World Cup of Nations.

The race was won by American Keith O`Brien, who produced the Ron Hodges-trained Noble Calling to score by a neck and head from Moving Experience and Dunkineely Boy.

O`Brien, from New York, is assistant trainer to his father Leo, who 10 years ago sent Fourstars Allstar across the Atlantic to win the Irish 2000 Guineas.
